Michael Robson

– Summary of Practice and Training - December 2011

Having graduated in Drawing and Painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee in 2003, Michael has since pursued his ambitions as an artist. An interest in the visible world has developed his practice as a landscape painter, where he is committed to the activity of easel painting outdoors, recording directly the effects of light he observes around him. His local environment of North Fife, where he lives by the shores of the River Tay, has made him sensitive to the landscape, and through painting the artist can transcend from the passivity of observation to a more active intercourse.

Michael’s interest in the landscape has resulted in the production of box after box of small studies, reiterated daily, and each particular to the nuances of colour and light special to his surroundings. The daily and seasonal changes of light particular to the area, nurture an ongoing relationship with the landscape, whilst providing material to sustain his technical evolution as a Fine Artist.

Michael’s work has been exhibited widely throughout North East Scotland, and he is represented in numerous private collections in the UK and abroad. In 2005, he was asked by Fife Council to represent the Arts during the Open Golf Tournament in St.Andrews, and has since exhibited in galleries in Dundee, St.Andrews, Crail, Pittenweem, Newburgh and Edinburgh. He has a broad experience of travel, having worked extensively in both Holland and Spain, and has a studio in Newburgh, Fife. A continuing ambition to advance an artistic career has resulted in recognition from both the RSA and SSA, and in 2009 was awarded the Phyllis Roberts Prize for the most promising young painter at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Exhibition in London. Recent accolades include exhibiting with both the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the Royal Watercolour Society in London, and receiving the Caran D’Ache Award at Patchings Art Exhibition in 2010.
